July 1, 2013 – Rigel Engineering Debuts Low-Cost Rugged OpenVPX Carrier

6U OpenVPX Dual PMC, XMC, MiniPCIe Carrier card with Integrated 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Merritt Island, FL. – July 1, 2013 – Rigel Engineering has introduced a new low cost, flexible solution for embedding rugged PMC/XMC modules in deployed compute platforms. Rigel’s VP3500 VPX 6U carrier card is the most flexible and feature-filled VPX carrier in the embedded industry. It allows system designers to greatly expand system I/O capacity while reducing overall board count and system cost.

The VP3500 not only features two PMC/XMC slots, it also provides two MiniPCIe sockets to satisfy practically any additional I/O requirements. The PMC/XMC I/O may be accessed via the front panel or VPX backplane. Pluggable I/O modules allow for standard PMC/XMC differential and single-ended I/O routing (Vita 46.9) plus the flexibility for custom routing options to the backplane. Additionally, a MiniPCIe I/O adapter card can interface practically any MiniPCIe card I/O to the VPX backplane. MiniPCIe I/O is also available on the front panel.

“What differentiates the VP3500 from other carrier cards is its integrated 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch”, said Lee Stevens, CEO of Rigel Engineering, LLC. “The switch is configured with VPX standard Vita 46.6 routing to the backplane. It supports two 1000BASE-T and two 1000BASE-BX ports. The 5th port is routed to the backplane on user I/O pins and may be used as a maintenance port.”

The on-board management microcontroller allows continuous communication between the system controller and the VP3500. The microcontroller configures the VP3500 options and monitors the on-board power supplies as well as ambient board temperature. The microcontroller reports status and responds to system controller commands.
